Barrington Nova scotia selected as host community for
2022 world championships

“We are honoured to bring an event with this level of prestige to Canada, Nova Scotia and the community of Barrington,” says NLS president Burlin Nickerson. “Bringing the best axe throwers in the world to Nova Scotia is a dream and an enormous responsibility, but with the support of the community of Barrington, we believe we can deliver the best world championship ever held in the sport.”

Background

On August 11, 2019, a meeting was held in Hallefors, Sweden at the 2019 World Championships of Double-bitted Axe Throwing which included representatives of the 14 nations present.  It was decided based on unanimous vote that Canada would host the next World Championships in 2021 through organization of the Nova Lumberjacks Society (NLS) in cooperation with Wild Axe Productions.

Every two years, the World Championships of Double-bitted Axe Throwing brings together elite axe throwing competitors from all over the globe. The event has previously been hosted in Hallefors, Sweden in 2019 and Munster (Hessen), Germany in 2017.

The Championships are a three (3) day, tournament style, point-based competition that includes Youth, Women, Men and Team categories competing in Qualification and Championship rounds.

selecting a host community

to ensure a fair and transparent process, the Nova lumberjacks society board of directors and event organizing committee identified seven select Maritime communities and have asked them to prepare a formal bid proposal to be considered the host community for the 2021 world championships.

request for proposal documents were sent out November 14, 2019 to the following select communities:
- Barrington, Nova SCotia
- Halifax/Dartmouth, NOva scotia
- liverpool, nova scotia
- Moncton, new brunswick
- Sydney, nova scotia
- Truro, Nova scotia
- yarmouth, nova scotia

  The bid period closed march 31  2020.  the nLS received two formal submissions to host; one from Barrington, Nova scotia and one from MOncton, New Brunswick.

Evaluation;
the NLS   appointed a seven (7) person evaluation committee to score each bid submission.  The committee consisted of NLS members, directors and officers located across nova scotia who each scored proposals independently out of a possible 100pts.

When all bids were scored and summed, out of a maximum score of 700 possible points (100pts/evaluation * 7 evaluations), Barrington outscored Moncton by a total score of 577pts to 528pts (respectively).
evaluation Scoring summary can be viewed here.

Barrington was contacted on May 13, 2020 and made aware that due to their stellar proposal, they had been selected by the nova lumberjacks society as host community for this prestigious event.

Barrington Warden Eddie Nickerson says hosting this event is great news.
“The impact this event will have on our local economic, not only in Barrington but regionally, will be phenomenal,” he says. “I know our community and volunteers will help create a memorable experience for the competitors, many of whom will be first-time visitors to Nova Scotia and Canada. “We are grateful the Nova Lumberjacks Society has entrusted us to host such a high caliber event in rural Nova Scotia.”

next steps;
a local organizing committee (LOC) has been appointed which will lead primary organizing roles related to the world championships.  The LOC is comprised of members of the NLS, members of the local and regional host community, Municipality staff and axe throwing enthusiasts.

The LOC was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in September 2020.  LOC Board of Directors are:
President - Ryan McIntyre (NLS)
Vice President & Secretary - Ericka Sutherland (NLS)
2nd Vice President - David Coady
Treasurer - Chris Frotten (CAO, Municipality of Barrington)
