The NLS was proud to be a sponsor of the 2022 Canadian Axe Throwing Team that competed at the World Championships.  Over 50 competitors represented Canada at Worlds from 7 provinces including Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Ontario and Prince Edward Island.

The team did amazing overall!

In singles competition, Joe Fancy and Tyler Wentzell made the men's finals and finished 4th and 5th overall, respectively, while Alishia Berthelet (Halifax, Nova Scotia) finished as Top Canadian with a 5th overall ranking in Women's singles competition.

In 3-person Team's division, the team of Suzy Atwood, Sandy Cranton and Rebecca Fancy, representing Nova Scotia's south shore region, took 2nd overall in the Women's division resulting in the highest Canadian placing at the World Championships yet! Notable mention to the Canadian Women's team from Halifax, Nova Scotia of Cynthia Kennedy, Lisa Tramley and Alisiha Berthelet who finished 4th overall, narrowly missing the podium as well!

2019 Team Captain

Cynthia was the heart and soul of the 2019 Team.  She led the group in fundraising efforts to support travel costs to send to the team to Sweden for the 2019 World Championships, but more importantly led the team with her passion and positive attitude.

Cynthia, alongside Tess Billings and Suzy Atwood battled their way to an impressive 4th overall finish in the Women's Team World Championship after knocking out five other national teams.

aka "the one-handed Bandit"

Matt burst onto the axe throwing scene in a big way in 2017, winning a qualifier at the TImber Lounge earning him a spot at the World Championships in Germany that year.  His unique one-handed style along with his fantastic attitude and trademark kilt have made him an instant celebrity in the global axe throwing community.  He's well known for his many trick-shots, but none more popular than his incredible 60ft (20m) throw onto a moving target!  The man, the myth, the legend!

Karl is quite possibly the winningest axe thrower in Canadian history.  He's been "chucking the steel" for over three decades and is always in contention for the top spot, no matter what competition he enters. Karl brings an intensity, focus and drive which is unmatched by his fellow competitors. His unique underhand throwing style is one of a kind and propelled Karl to take the "Top Overall Canadian" in the men's division at the 2018 Canadian Championships.  He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team and makes his teammates better because of it.

Tess, along side Suzy Atwood and Cynthia Kennedy were Canadian stand-outs at the 2019 World Championships, finishing 4th overall in the team division!

Joey Bridgeo

Joey has only been throwing for a couple of years, but has quickly become a force to reckon with in the world of axe throwing!  He's taken home multiple league titles at his home club the Timber Lounge and made it to the Championship Round of the 2019 Canadian Championships.  Don't let Joey's calm demeanor fool you, his smooth delivery finds the bullseye more often than not.  He's a sniper so look out!

Suzy Atwood
Barrington, Nova scotia
club - Wild axe

Suzy started the Wild Axe Women in Barrington, a women's axe throwing league in 2014, which introduced women to the sport of axe throwing. She started throwing competitively in 2016 for the first time at the World Axe Throwing Championships in Germany, where she placed 7th overall! An incredible accolade!  In 2018, Suzy traveled to Wicklow, Ireland to compete in the Irish Open, and then competed in the Canadian Championships, where she made the podium, placing 3rd overall!  Even with all those accomplishments, Suzy says her axe throwing highlight was teaching Rick Mercer how to axe throw on the Rick Mercer Report!

In total, Suzy has represented Canada in axe throwing overseas three times... and it's just the beginning!

David is a registered massage therapist, and became the official team Canada medical professional in Sweden, offering "tune-up's" to battered team members throughout the tournament.  Quite possibly, this alone made him team MVP!
